SOCIAL STUDIES: Kourtney Kyung Smith // Common Body

Kourtney Kyung Smith. Artist, perpetual student, philosopher of sorts. I mostly work these days as a photographer, creative consultant, and make art with my partner under the name Common Body.

Why do you make your work?

As un-sexy as it sounds, I make most of my work in order to pay the bills and to foster fulfilling relationships with people. I love collaboration and feeling connected to my community.

We made common body in order to reimagine the way we engage with our bodies/environments and so that we could build a life practice of research and art-making that is outside of traditional systems and institutions.

What do you believe in?

Knowing yourself & the interconnectivity of all things

Name one thing you say no to?

The abuse of power

What change would you like to see?

A cultural shift away from the scarcity mindset

Name one thing that makes you happy?

 Watching inspired films

If you have used NOTO before, what is your favorite product and why?

I love the wash because I think multi-use products are a key to sustainable living. I also love the scrub because it’s the best natural exfoliant I’ve found that works for my skin.

How would you describe your personal routine?

It’s more about how I feel rather than what I look like

What did you want to be as a child?

An archeologist

Can you remember one solid piece of advice you've gotten for the growth of your work?

Not specifically about work. But when I was young, my grandfather once told me to trust my inner voice. That has helped me more than most things.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?

My partner. And too many others to name.

Who is one person in culture that you feel is making a positive and inspiring change ?

Such a hard one. I think Dr. Nicole LePera (@the.holistic.psychologist) is doing important work on the internet for people who might otherwise not have access. The more people in the world that pursue self-healing, the less trauma we will inflict on each other <3
