The "for him" shelf is blue and smells like a glacier. The "for her" shelf is pink and smells like a rose garden. Neither of them is based on science.
✨ At NOTO, we've never divided skincare by gender. Our complete skincare collection is formulated for skin — full stop. Because that's all that matters.

Here's the truth the beauty industry doesn't love to say out loud: there is no medical or scientific basis for gender-specific skincare. Your skin doesn't know your pronouns. It knows whether it's oily or dry, reactive or resilient, getting enough antioxidants or not. That's it.
Everything else — the packaging, the marketing segmentation, the separate shelves — is a sales strategy, not a dermatological one.
We built NOTO on this exact premise. Founder Gloria Noto spent years as a makeup artist working across every kind of face, every kind of skin. The brand that came out of that experience was never going to be divided by gender. It was going to be ingredient-first, formulated for skin.
This is the routine that reflects that. It works for every body.
Why the Gender Divide in Skincare Is a Marketing Invention
Gendered skincare as a concept dates back to the 1930s, when brands started segmenting by demographic to sell more SKUs. It stuck, not because it made scientific sense, but because it doubled the shelf space.
The science tells a different story:
- A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that men and women had similar skin hydration levels — directly challenging the assumption that men inherently have oilier skin.
- The American Academy of Dermatology states that the skincare basics remain the same across genders — what matters more is an individual's skin type and specific concerns.
- Your gender doesn't determine the type of skin you have. Testosterone increases oil production — but every person has some level of this hormone in their body, not just men.
There is no medical or scientific reason for products to be divided solely by gender.
What you actually need to know: your skin type, your concerns, and your actives. Nothing else.

Know Your Skin Type First
Before any product recommendation makes sense, know what you're working with:
Oily Skin
Enlarged pores, shine by midday, prone to breakouts. Needs lightweight, non-comedogenic products. Contrary to popular belief, oily skin still needs hydration — stripping it makes oil production worse.
💧 Best for oily skin: Deep Serum with grapeseed oil actually helps regulate sebum production.
Dry Skin
Tight feeling after cleansing, flakiness, dull texture. Needs richer emollients and barrier-supporting ingredients like fatty acids and ceramides.
💧 Best for dry skin: Moisture Riser Cream with marula oil for deep nourishment.
Combination Skin
Oily through the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin), drier on cheeks. The most common skin type, and the one most poorly served by one-size-fits-all products.
💧 Best for combination skin: Deep Serum balances both oily and dry areas.
Sensitive / Reactive Skin
Redness, stinging, frequent irritation. Needs fragrance-free, minimal-ingredient formulas. Less is more — introducing fewer variables makes it easier to identify what's working.
💧 Best for sensitive skin: All NOTO products are formulated without synthetic fragrances or common irritants.
Normal Skin
Balanced, few concerns, tolerates most formulas. Lucky. Focus on protection and maintenance rather than correction.
💧 Best for normal skin: A simple routine with 5 essential products.

The Routine: Every Step, For Every Body
Step 1: Cleanse
Cleansing removes the day — pollution, sebum, dead cells, product residue — and preps skin to absorb what comes next. Use a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser that doesn't strip.
Signs you're over-cleansing: Tight, squeaky-clean feeling after washing. That's your barrier complaining. Back off to once a day if needed, or switch to a milder formula.
💧 NOTO recommendation: The Wash — A gentle, sulfate-free cleanser that works for all skin types without stripping or irritating.
Step 2: Exfoliate (2–3x Per Week, Not Daily)
Exfoliation removes the buildup of dead cells that dulls skin and blocks actives from absorbing. Chemical exfoliants — AHAs like lactic acid for dry skin, BHAs like salicylic acid for oily or acne-prone — are gentler and more effective than physical scrubs for most people.
Don't use actives every night. Your barrier needs recovery time.
Step 3: Serum
This is your highest-impact step. Serums deliver concentrated actives in a low-viscosity base that penetrates deeper than moisturizers can. Apply after cleansing, before moisturizer. Press into skin — don't rub.
Oil-based serums, like NOTO's Deep Serum, are especially well-suited for all skin types. Built on a base of organic grapeseed, marula, and rosehip oil, they deliver fat-soluble antioxidants and essential fatty acids that signal to your skin that it's nourished — which actually reduces excess oil production over time. Non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, and genuinely multi-use.
💧 NOTO recommendation: Deep Serum — Works for all skin types, all genders, all bodies.

Step 4: Moisturize
Seals in hydration and supports your skin barrier. Choose weight based on skin type: gel or fluid for oily, cream for dry, lotion for combination. Even oily skin needs this step.
💧 NOTO recommendation: Moisture Riser Cream — Rich yet lightweight, works for all skin types.
Step 5: SPF (Morning Only)
The single most effective anti-aging product available. UV damage is cumulative, irreversible, and the primary driver of hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and collagen breakdown. There is no version of a good skincare routine that doesn't include SPF.
Minimum SPF 30. Every day. Year-round. Regardless of skin tone — melanin provides some protection, not enough.
💧 NOTO recommendation: Practice Safe Sun SPF 30 — Clean, reef-safe mineral sunscreen for all skin tones.
The Complete Gender-Neutral Routine
All NOTO products are formulated for skin — not gender. Vegan, cruelty-free, and effective for every body.
The Ingredients Worth Understanding
You don't need to memorize a cosmetic chemistry textbook. But knowing a few key actives helps you shop smarter and avoid being misled by marketing.
Grapeseed Oil
High in linoleic acid (omega-6), often deficient in oily and acne-prone skin. Lightweight, non-comedogenic, and rich in OPCs (oligomeric proanthocyanidins), potent antioxidants that protect against free radical damage. One of the most biocompatible carrier oils for all skin types.
💧 Find it in: Deep Serum
Marula Oil
High in oleic acid (omega-9), deeply nourishing for dry and mature skin. Absorbs faster than argan, works well under makeup, and has a silky texture that doesn't leave residue.
💧 Find it in: Deep Serum and Moisture Riser Cream
Rosehip Oil
Contains trans-retinoic acid precursors and vitamin C precursors alongside essential fatty acids. Meaningful evidence for reducing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation with consistent use. Best in PM routines.

Niacinamide
Reduces oil production, calms inflammation, fades dark spots, strengthens the skin barrier. One of the best-studied and most versatile actives available. Works for nearly every skin type.
Hyaluronic Acid
Holds up to 1,000x its weight in water. Pulls moisture into the skin when applied to damp skin. Lightweight and compatible with virtually everything.
Retinol / Retinoids
The most evidence-backed anti-aging category. Speeds cell turnover, stimulates collagen, fades hyperpigmentation. Start low, go slow, PM only, always followed by SPF.
SPF (Yes, Again)
Because it bears repeating. The single most important anti-aging ingredient you can use.
What You Don't Need
Just as important as what to use:
You Don't Need a 10-Step Routine
More products mean more potential for irritation and conflict between actives. A well-chosen 4–5 step routine will consistently outperform a bloated shelf of 12 things used inconsistently.

You Don't Need Separate "Men's" and "Women's" Products
Separating skincare products by gender is mostly a marketing tool — and it can keep people from fully optimizing their routines. Your skin type matters. Your gender doesn't.
You Don't Need Fragrance in Your Skincare
Fragrance is the most common cause of contact dermatitis and sensitization. It's in products for aesthetic reasons, not functional ones. Especially for reactive skin, fragrance-free is always the safer choice.
All NOTO products are formulated without synthetic fragrances. We use only natural essential oils when scent is needed.
You Don't Need to Spend a Lot
The actives that work — niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, SPF, a simple cleanser — are available at every price point. What you need is consistency, not luxury spend.
Building the Routine Around Your Skin, Not Your Gender
Here's the simple version:
Morning Routine (All Skin Types)
- The Wash — Gentle cleanser
- Deep Serum — 2-3 drops, antioxidant protection
- Moisture Riser Cream — Seal in hydration
- Practice Safe Sun SPF 30 — Non-negotiable
Evening Routine (All Skin Types)
- The Wash — Double cleanse if you wore SPF/makeup
- Exfoliate — 2–3x per week only
- Deep Serum — 3-5 drops for repair and renewal
- Moisture Riser Cream — Optional, based on skin needs
That's it. Adjust product weight and actives for your skin type. Stay consistent for 60–90 days before evaluating.
The skin you're in doesn't fit in a pink or blue box. It just needs the right ingredients, applied consistently, by someone who actually pays attention to what it's doing.

Why Gender-Neutral Skincare Matters
Beyond the science, there's a human element here. Gendered skincare creates unnecessary barriers:
- It forces people into categories that may not reflect their identity
- It limits product discovery — someone might avoid a great product because it's marketed to the "wrong" gender
- It perpetuates outdated stereotypes about who "should" care about their skin
- It creates confusion about what products actually do vs. who they're "for"
Everyone deserves access to effective skincare without having to navigate gendered marketing. Your skin doesn't care about the color of the bottle. It cares about the ingredients inside.
Common Questions About Gender-Neutral Skincare
Don't men have different skin than women?
Not in any way that requires separate products. Testosterone can increase oil production, but hormone levels vary widely among all people. Skin type (oily, dry, combination, etc.) is a far more useful categorization than gender.
Can I use "women's" products if I'm a man?
Absolutely. The only difference is marketing. If a product works for your skin type, use it. The pink packaging doesn't change the chemistry.
Are gender-neutral products less effective?
The opposite. Gender-neutral products are formulated based on skin science, not demographic segmentation. They're designed to work for a wider range of people, which often means more thoughtful formulation.
What about shaving products?
Shaving is a mechanical process, not a gendered one. A good shaving product protects the skin barrier and reduces irritation — regardless of who's using it or where they're shaving.
